Read This Before You Buy
The one coating we will not promise to remove
Mass-produced furniture leaves the factory wearing heat-cured and UV-cured coatings that are engineered to shrug off chemicals for the life of the piece. If your furniture still wears its original factory finish and has never been stripped, sanded, or repainted, our stripper will not break that coating down.
The good news: the moment a piece has been refinished once, the factory coating is gone. Painted-over thrift store finds, hand-me-downs with a coat of latex, and anything an earlier owner already stripped are all fair game.

- 02Brush on a thick 1/8" layer of stripper and let it dwell a full 5 to 8 hours.
- 03Check the surface. Wrinkling, bubbling, or a coating that scrapes soft means you are clear to strip the whole piece.
No reaction after a full dwell?That is a factory sealed coating. Sanding is the honest path for that piece, and we would rather tell you now than after checkout.
Identify Your Finish
What is on your furniture right now?
You do not need a chemistry degree. Match what you see to one of three families, then give it the dwell time it needs. Longer dwells always work better than early scraping.
Paints
Latex, oil-based, acrylic, chalk, milk, and spray paint.
The cue: solid color that hides the wood grain completely. Chalk and milk paint look flat and powdery. One or two coats lift in about an hour.
Clear Coats
Varnish, shellac, lacquer, and polyurethane.
The cue: you can see the wood grain through an amber or glossy film. Older varnish and shellac lift fast. Polyurethane is the stubborn one, plan on hours, not minutes.
Tough Coatings
Epoxy resin, epoxy paint, and thick multi-layer buildup.
The cue: a thick, plasticky shell, or a piece painted so many times the details have gone soft. These want an overnight dwell under plastic wrap.

One 1/2 gallon kit covers roughly 100 to 150 sq ft. A dresser or a set of chairs sits well under that. A full armoire or a room of trim may need a second kit.

Match the technique to the material
The stripper is the same in every bottle. The technique shifts with what is underneath the finish.
Wood furniture and antiques
Our home turf. The soy formula softens coatings without biting into the wood underneath, which is exactly what an antique needs. Test a hidden spot first, scrape with a plastic or soft-edge scraper, and let the piece dry fully before stain or seal.
Metal furniture and hardware
Yes, it strips paint off metal. Pull hinges and pulls off the piece and coat them separately so you are not working around them. The semi-gel clings to curved hardware without running off.
Doors, legs, and vertical faces
The semi-gelled viscosity is built for this. Lay on a full 1/8" layer and it stays put on cabinet doors, table legs, and trim with minimal runoff. Vertical surfaces land on the lower end of the coverage range, so budget a little extra.
Painted floors
Small areas, yes. For rooms beyond a couple hundred square feet, switch to our Floor Stripper. It is stronger and far more cost-effective per square foot on big buildups, including stairs with ten layers of paint.
Safety First
Painted before 1978? Test for lead before you strip.
Homes and furniture finished before 1978 can carry lead-based paint. A swab test kit from any hardware store settles the question in minutes. If the swab turns up lead, you can still work, you just work smarter.
Why wet stripping helps
- Chemical stripping keeps the old coating wet and soft, so it comes off in sheets instead of the fine dust that sanding throws into the air.
- Skip dry sanding and dry scraping on suspect paint. Dust is the main exposure route.
- Work outdoors or ventilate well, and keep kids and pets away from the workspace.
Gear up properly
- Nitrile or butyl gloves. Latex will not hold up.
- NIOSH-approved safety glasses and a respirator.
- Drop cloths under the whole piece so scrapings stay contained.
- Wash hands and clothes when you finish. No food or drink in the workspace.
Disposal is where local law takes over.Bag your scrapings, rags, and drop cloth, seal them, and follow your local regulations for lead paint waste. Rules differ by state and municipality, so check with your local waste authority or your state environmental agency before anything goes in a bin.
The Method
Seven steps to bare wood
The kit includes both halves of the system: the stripper that lifts the finish, and the Finishing Cleaner that neutralizes the surface so your new stain or paint actually bonds.

Shake the stripper bottle thoroughly.
The formula can separate in storage. A good shake brings it back to uniform.

Apply a generous 1/8" layer.
Use the included brush or a roller. Thick beats thin, a starved coat dries out before it finishes working.

Let it dwell.
Check the dwell table above for your finish. Walk away. Early scraping is the number one cause of a failed strip.

Scrape the lifted finish gently.
A plastic or soft-edge scraper protects the wood. Multiple layers still on? Reapply directly, no cleanup between passes.

Spray on Finishing Cleaner and wipe.
This neutralizes residue that would otherwise fight your new finish. Do not skip it.

Rinse and check.
Wipe with a clean damp rag, then test with a dry one. No color transfer means the surface is clean.

Let it dry completely.
Then stain, paint, or seal. The piece is ready for its second life.
Shop-tested tips
- Tough finish or 5+ layers? Cover the wet stripper with plastic wrap and leave it overnight. Long dwells will not hurt the piece.
- If the stripper dries out during a long dwell, a light second coat reactivates it.
- “It is not working” almost always means “it needs more time.” Thick poly wants 5 to 8 hours minimum.
- Leftover Finishing Cleaner doubles as a brush and roller degreaser after the project.

How do I know if my piece has a factory sealed coating?
If it was bought new, has never been repainted or refinished, and wears a uniform glass-hard sheen with no brush marks, treat it as factory sealed. Run the hidden spot test above before committing. No reaction after a full dwell confirms it.

Does it work on chalk paint and milk paint?
Yes. Chalk, milk, latex, acrylic, oil-based, and spray paint all come off, along with varnish, shellac, lacquer, polyurethane, and epoxy. Multiple layers lift in a single application with enough dwell time.

Is it safe to use inside my house?
Yes. The formula is soy-based and low odor with no methylene chloride and no carcinogens. Still treat it like the workshop product it is: ventilate the room, wear gloves and eye protection, and keep it away from kids, food, and drink.

What about old stairs or a whole painted floor?
Small floor patches are fine for the kit. For full rooms or stairs carrying ten layers of paint, our Floor Stripper is stronger and cheaper per square foot. And if those stairs predate 1978, test for lead first and follow your local disposal laws.
