How It Works

It soaks in. It doesn't burn through.

Our Furniture Stripper is a soy-based gel. It doesn't eat through a finish in minutes the way harsh methylene chloride strippers do. It slowly soaks into the coating, swells it, and breaks its grip on the wood.

That's why our dwell times run from 50 minutes to overnight. The simple rule: a finish we can strip is a finish the gel can get into.

Same Name, Different Cure

Why one gives way and the other holds

Strips

DIY epoxy and resin

  • Tabletop resin, epoxy paint and bar-top pours cure at room temperature. They're hard, but the cured network is looser than a factory finish, and it often isn't fully cured.
  • Epoxy's weak spot is its bond to the wood. Once the gel works its way underneath, the coating lets go.
  • Give it 5 to 8 hours covered in plastic so the gel stays wet long enough to reach that bond.

Won't Strip

Factory-sealed finishes

  • Catalyzed lacquer and conversion varnish. An acid catalyst cross-links the resin into a very dense network.
  • UV-cured polyester or acrylic. It cures in seconds under high-intensity light and is about as tightly bonded as a finish gets.
  • Two-part polyurethane. It's often heat-cured in a spray booth.

The Short Version

Resisting solvents is their job

Factory finishes are cured with heat, UV light or catalysts in controlled conditions, and they're built to stand up to chemicals for the life of the piece. Cabinet finishes are even tested against household cleaners. The network is so tight that our gel can't get in, so nothing swells and nothing lifts.

Extra dwell time won't change that. The gel isn't being slow here. It simply can't get through. You'll find these finishes on most mass-produced furniture and on nearly all kitchen cabinets that still wear their original coating.

Good news for thrift findsOnce a piece has been refinished or painted over, the paint on top is fair game. A factory table someone rolled latex over will still lose that latex. The original factory coat underneath may stay put.

How To Tell

The fingernail scratch test

No chemicals needed. All it takes is a fingernail and a spot nobody sees: inside a leg, under the top or on the back panel.

Scratch it and see

  1. 01Press a fingernail firmly into the finish and drag it about an inch.
  2. 02Look at the spot under good light and run a finger over it.
  3. 03Left a mark or feels soft? It's a softer finish like shellac, wax, older varnish or paint, and it will strip easily.

No mark at all?It's a hard finish, so think about where it came from. If it was brushed or poured on by hand, like polyurethane or DIY epoxy, it will strip with a longer 5 to 8 hour dwell. If the piece came from the factory, has never been refinished, and has the same glassy sheen everywhere, even underneath, it's likely a factory-sealed finish. Skip to the options below.

What to do with a factory finish

Scuff it, then strip

Scuff-sand the surface with 80 to 120 grit to break the top layer, then apply the stripper. Sometimes the gel gets in at the scratches and lifts the finish from there. It's worth a try on a test spot, but it isn't a sure thing.

Sand it off

Often, sanding is the honest answer for a factory finish. Work up through the grits and let the sander do the work instead of pressing hard.

Watch the veneer

Many factory pieces are a thin wood veneer over MDF or particleboard. Aggressive sanding or scraping can go right through it, so check an edge or the back to see what's underneath before you commit.
